ADELAIDE, SA — July 23, 2025

Wild weather made landfall across South Australia overnight, with coastal suburbs bearing the brunt of a powerful low-pressure system. From sea foam smashing the esplanade at Moana to power outages blanketing parts of Adelaide, the impact has been fast and disruptive — and more may be on the way.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe weather warnings early Tuesday, and by dawn, wind gusts of up to 96 km/h were recorded near Kingston and Robe. Flooding rains swept through the Adelaide Hills, with localized totals exceeding 20mm, forcing road closures and SES callouts across multiple suburbs.

“It was like a mini tsunami,” said one resident in Moana. “Sea foam, debris, the wind howling — we’ve never seen it hit this hard this early in the season.”

Over 1,000 customers lost power overnight, with SA Power Networks working to restore service in Glenelg, Norwood, and Morphett Vale. Fallen branches blocked multiple backstreets in Burnside and Parkside, while traffic was delayed on Tapleys Hill Road due to flash flooding.

🌊 What’s Happening

  • High winds: Gusts of 80–96 km/h expected through midday
  • Rain totals: Adelaide Hills lead with over 20mm, heavier patches forecast for coastal SA
  • Flood risk: Low-lying roads and walkways may remain waterlogged for several hours
  • Surf hazard: Elevated tides and large swells continue to hit jetty areas and beachside promenades

🛠 What You Can Do Now

  • Bring in loose items (bins, planters, umbrellas)
  • Avoid beach walks and jetties through this afternoon
  • Charge essentials in case of ongoing outages
  • Drive cautiously on flooded or tree-lined streets
  • Consider upgrading your gear: dry bags, waterproof jackets, and windproof umbrellas

⚠️ What’s Next?

Forecasters are already tracking a second front, predicted to cross SA by Thursday night, pushing more rain into the southeast and likely impacting VIC, TAS, and NSW later this week.
